Get the Facts on
What is it?
Hep B" is a common STD that you can get by having sex without a condom with someone who is infected or by sharing needles with an infected person. It is a liver disease caused by the Hepatitis B virus (HBV).

Symptoms & Effects
Hep B is carried in the blood stream and attacks the liver. Once you're exposed, it can take 6 weeks to 6 months before you have symptoms. Some people never have symptoms, but still have the disease and can pass it on to other partners.

Symptoms include loss of appetite, extreme tiredness, pains in muscles and joints, nausea, darkened urine, yellowing of the skin and eyes and rashes. In the long run, Hepatitis B can kill you by destroying your liver.

Screening & Treatment
If you think you have been with someone who has Hep B, go get a blood test right away. If you do get Hepatitis B, there is a treatment that can decrease the infection.

Protection
You can really do something right now --- there is a Hepatitis B vaccine that protects more than 90% of people who use it from ever getting this virus. You get three shots over six months and it lasts for at least 15 years. It's available lots of places, including your doctor, a community clinic or Planned Parenthood.
